Today we are going to dig a little deeper into the stats this early season.
The funny story of the season so far is the Celtics and the Knicks. How come? you may ask. Well, with all the changes that happen on a sim to sim basis, they are the only ones that have maintained their rank for the most part. What do you mean? you may now question me.
The Celtics have been ranked 1-2-1-1-1 so far while the knicks have been 2-1-2-2-2. This is very rare considering that the early season has a lot of changes every sim. Those 2 teams have been consistently dominant for the rankings. Also have to remember I have added and removed statistics that still did not change their position. The only other team that that has happened to is the Grizzlies. They have been 29th every sim, but the 1st one where they were 28th. Fun fact of the sim for you here.
Now let us looks more closely at the stats.
Knicks and their ranked 11th in Points per field goal. Why would that be? Are you assuming that it is because they shoot a lot and miss a lot? you would be somewhat right. The Knicks are 8th in FG% but they are 2nd PPG. Looking at their roster, everyone in the starters were just around 47% except for Jermain O'Neal who is at 39%. Their defense is cooking though with fewest points allowed by Field Goals. They are also 2nd in assist per turnovers for the opponents and in rebound differential. They are rebounding the ball very well at this point and it lets them get more of these shots up.
On the other end, the #1 ranked team in the rankings is #1 for points for field goals while they are #10 for the same stats for opponents. Looking at their stats and rankings though, the issue is not FG% technically. It is the 3P%. They are ranked last in opponents 3P%. Since those count for 3, they do add up pretty quick. For the other advanced stats, they are basically at the top in all categories. They could use some assistance for rebounding if they wanted to. The interesting thing is that they have very few games played so far with 16 while the other teams in the top of the East have more than 16 wins alone.
The question that I see with the rankings is, is the East better than the West?
East has 5 of the top 6, while the West as the rest of the top 10 (so 5-5 for the top 10).
If we extend to top 16 it is 8-8.
Top 20? 11-9.
Does that tell us anything about the East vs the West? To me the most telling is probably the 5 teams in the top 6. East might be harder again this year.
