Contracts resigning and Free Agency is an interesting period, where GM put their hopes to form best possible line-up while staying within certain cap rules. Inevitably underpayments and overpayments occur. This time I want to dig deeper into discrepancies between contact and the actual results. So, my first goal was to find best producing players earning less than Low Level Exception.
Bruce Seals SF (29) $778,350 at Knicks
17 PPG 7 RPG
Last off-season New York signed him for minimum deal, and that was a steal. But when this happened again in 2006, that’s already some kind of paranormal activity. Or huge underestimation by other GM’s, since Bruce providing nice numbers for top contending team and even covering leading role while LaMelo Ball is injured.
Donny Marshall SF (30) $778,350 at MAGIC
16 PPG 6 RPG
Magic isn’t exactly a play-off material at the moment, but Donny would still be great addition to almost every team in the league. Especially, since he provides solid defence as well.
Loren Meyer C (29) $778,350 at SONICS
11 RPG 1 BPG
While Bargnani and Antetentontentamtomtokounmpo doing all the flashy stuff and averaging 55 points per game (combined), someone has to do all the dirty work – and it is done by few last day minimum contract signings. Meyer is the most notable out of them. This formula works great so far as Seattle are fighting for home court advantage in forthcoming playoffs.
Dewayne Dedmon C (30) $778,350 at WARRIORS
13 PPG 10 RPG 1.5 BPG
Warriors has been shopping him actively, since his numbers at defencive end does look nice. Offensively, below 40% FG shooting is less sexy, however, Dewayne proved himself at should hang around the league as rotational big for couple more seasons.
Honorable mentions to players earning lower than Mid Level Exception:
Tom Barker C (28) $3,000,000 at SPURS 13 PPG 11 RPG 1.5 BPG
Kim Hughes PF (31) $3,259,615 at KNICKS 10 RPG 2.5 BPG
Clint Caplea C (24) $4,038,616 at NETS 16 PPG 10 RPG
Cody Zeller C (27) $2,000,000 at ROCKETS 14 PPG 9 RPG
Herewith, let’s check the opposite. The criteria here was players, who are producing low numbers, while earning 10M or more a year. For sure some would say number one is Earl Monroe earning 26M while drinking tea at his retirement home, but now explore the active ones.
Charlie Scott PG (33) $26,250,00 at MAGIC
3 PPG in 8 minutes
Former main point guard of 3 times East champions Magic. Just last season he was averaging over 24 PPG and 7 assists a game, now was forced to give his minutes to sophomore Derek Fisher, who is seen as important part of Orlando future. Quite a sad situation for Charlie.
World B. Free PG (28) $13,474,471 at HAWKS
3 PPG in 4 minutes
Brian Taylor PG (32) $14,008,593 at HAWKS
6 PPG 2 APG and 1 TO in 14 minutes
Seems like at some point Hawks GM just stopped shopping McGinnis after realizing, that if he can’t deal him away, he for sure will not be able to move Brian Taylor and Mr. World. Let’s just wait till season 2010 when Atlantas’ cap b. free. Management showed love for these players and they spent all 7 seasons with Hawks, but now their skills are going down together with team results. While salary goes up.
George Johnson PF (33) $19,606,640 at KINGS
6 PPG 7 RPG 3 BPG in 21 minutes.
I mean he is still a great defender and among league leaders in blocks, backing-up all-league bigs at a very strong team, but almost 20M which will be 22.6M by the time he is 35… ooof.
Rick Barry SF (24) $10,000,000 at HORNETS
5 PPG 3 RPG and 1 TO in 15 minutes
Rick is actually not a bad player, and still have room for improvement. However, he simply lost competition to Kyle Anderson. Rick would be better fit with some still developing team, while Hornets are fighting for their play-off spot and cannot afford giving Rick more playtime.
There is an interesting trend, that most overpaid position is Point Guard, while most underpaid are either Centers or Small Forwards. Seems like fancy dribbling will get you more money than height and muscles.
