The Minnesota Timberwolves have been pretty vocal about the future of Tyrese Maxey with the team. The GM has commented in a few interviews that the team may take a step back next season after a Finals run, and currently trying to make it back this season as they battle the Utah Jazz in the playoffs. Maxey has been the starting point guard since day 1 playing in 82 games 4 of 5 seasons only missing 4 games in his career. The man has been very durable and has led the Wolves from a lotto team to a contender so why at just 24 years of age are the Wolves looking to move on? The answer might lay with the current state of the teams potential FA's listed below.
C Rich Kelley
PF John Shumate
C Edy Tavarez
SF Lloyd Neal
SF Kyle Anderson
SG Fred Brown
PG Tyrese Maxey
PG Norm Van Lier
The Wolves are looking at all starting players possibly offering to resign or test the free agent market. The team would clear 53.7 million in player salaries, along with another 9.3 million in dead cut player salaries. Clearly the Wolves cannot go into a full rebuild as the Phoenix Suns own the rights to the Wolves 2006, and 2007 1st round picks so could the team be looking at big FA moves? We do know this that the team wants Vin Baker to get more time after coming along nicely, they do have Wallace signed to a great deal, and rumor has it they want to get rookie PG Jordan Nightingale starting next season. Clearly that move along will force the team to take a step back while starting unproven Nightingale at key position on the court. Our prediction the Wolves find a way to resign Maxey to Mentor Nightingale, while trying to bring back John Shumate and or sign other big names to keep the team in the playoff mix. Either way it will be one of the most interesting offseason in Minnesota history.
