First league article of the season 2005 for me I guess. Unless this would still be considered 2004 season?
It is that time of the year where teams are looking to sign players to help them for the next seasons to come.
I will try to make a list of a few free agents that are looking good.
First I will list a few players with still great potential and great stats that could help teams for a couple seasons at least (Potential of B)
There is some good options there, but I feel like 2 of the best ones are Centers
C Elmore Smith B D+ D+ A B
From the Miami Heat, Smith was used as a backup with 22 minutes per game. Overall scored 8 points per game and 7 rebounds per game and 1.2 blocks per game. When he had starter minutes, he had over 20 points in the first 3 seasons, then 15 the next one. Also had over 10 rebounds per game and 2 blocks per game. This guy to me, seems like he could definitely be a starter still. Still has good potential and already has good attributes to begin with.
C Isiah Stewart B- C C- A- B+
From the Sonics, Stewart had around 30 minutes per game with them and getting about 15 points per game, 9 rebounds per game and 1.5 blocks. He was 46% from the field and 32% from three. So he is not a stretch center by any stretch (get it) of the imagination, but he could still get some here and there. He also has 74% free throw shooting, which ranks him higher than the previous center Smith who had only 66%. Seems like this guy could be an okay starter or a really good backup for a very good team.
PG Damon Stoudamire C+ A A- A- C-
From the Knicks, Stoudamire is an excellent player who still has good potential and already great attributes. I am sure the Knicks would have loved to resign him if they had the chance. With them, Damon scored 25 points per game last season on 50% from the field, 45% from 3 and 91% from the free throw line. He would be a starter point guard on a lot of teams and could be a huge asset for a team that is trying to flip the team around completely or a team that is in need of a great point guard and a good scorer.
PG Eric Money B B A A- C-
Wizards lost Money last season. With them, he got 27 points per game 46/36/85. He is not as efficient as Stoudamire is, but he also has double Stoudamire's assists with as many turnovers, 8 assists per game with about 2 turnovers per game. He also got more steals than Stoudamire with 2.3 steals per game, versus the 1.6 from the ex-Knicks PG. Those could be because of different game plans, but they are still there.
PF Dwight Jones B+ C- C- A- A-
Jones left the Nets this off season in favor of trying to find a big pay day. He was around the 21 points per game last season with 2.5 blocks per game and 11 rebound per game. He had his best season right when he left for free agency which is all in his favor to get a big money contract at this point. He is going to be in the top for big man free agents.
Now for players who do not have the same potential, but still have great attributes overall.
PG Travis Best C+ A- A A- D+ potential of C
Mavericks lost their starter this offseason to free agency. They could be trying to sign him again, but that will have to be seen. 21 points per game on 46% shooting and 40% from beyond the arc. He could be a great asset for a team who is looking for a scorer. Like Stoudamire, he has low assists per game with 5 and 2 turnovers per game. He seems to be the next man up if you are looking for a scoring PG after Damon.
C Gorgui Deng B C C A- A- potential of C
30 minutes per game, 12.5 points per game, 10 rebounds per game and 2.4 blocks per game. That is what Deng went into Free Agency with after leaving the Hornets. at 42% shooting and 80% from the free throw line, he seems like one of the best scorer big men that are possibly available in free agency this off season. Would be a good player to get rebounds and blocks at least and possibility of scoring.
PG Don Buse C C- A- A- D+ potential of C
If you are looking for a more traditional PG, Don might be your guy. He did not play much with the 76ers, so it is hard to say what he could really do, but in 9 mins per game, he had 2 assists per game and 0.3 turnovers. So if we were to bring it to 30 mins per game, it would be around the 7 assists and 1 turnover per game which would be pretty good. It would help with keeping turnovers low for the team.
PG Mike Gale C+ C A+ A+ C- potential of C
Like Buse, he is more of a traditional point guard. He has excellent handling and can really defend. 6 assist per gamer and 1.4 turnovers per game is what he got in his past season with the Clippers. He also got 1.6 steals per game with the team, so he can help disrupt the offense of the other team. He could also the team with leadership, he who made it to the conference final last season with the Clippers.
SF Earl Williams B- D+ C- A- A potential of C
This guy could be useful for a team who wants a rebounder. He is great at grabbing the ball from the 3 position and could be an asset to a team. He had 7 rebounds per game and 7 points per game coming from the bench for the Blazers last season. He could be a very good rebounder for a team that is looking for one and can also provide some scoring although very limited to the inside.
Hope you enjoy the read, this is just a few guys I saw by looking at the free agents.
