Fresh off a Game 7 loss to the Toronto Raptors in the Eastern Conference Finals, league sources are saying that the New York Knicks will be trading Andrea Bargnani this off-season. Bargnani delivered a disappointing performance in the series, and according to the reports the Knicks have grown tired of his "soft" play.
One league insider says: Since Bargnani is Italian, lets use a Deniro in Bronx Tale line. Remember when he told his son Colegio "The Saddest thing in life is wasted talent"? Thats how the Knicks view Bargnani at this moment. He has all the offensive talent in the world. One of the best triple threat scorers in the game. Inside game. Midrange game. Three Point shooting. He's got it all. His talent is amazing. But his production has been disappointing. Especially when it matters most. Hes had rough shooting performances in previous postseasons. But his disappearing act in the EC Finals takes the cake. And now New York is done with him. Expect him to be traded early into the off-season once the league office opens trading.
Bargnani struggled throughout the ECF. For the exception of two games, he was horrible vs Toronto.
Game 1: 28 points 9/19 FG
Game 2: 15 points 5/14 FG
Game 3: 18 points 7/10 FG
Game 4: 6 points 0/7 FG
Game 5: 14 points 6/10 FG
Game 6: 29 points 12/20 FG
Game 7: 14 points 5/17 FG
In the 4 games New York lost, Bargnani totalled 52 points (13 PPG average). He scored 6 points in Game 4. Couldn't make a single shot. 98/89/78 offensive number ratings, and he had ZERO field goal makes. Just an embarrassing effort by the 6-10 Italian. And with the season on the line, Game 7 at home, must win situation. He shot 5/17 with 3 turnovers. What a chokejob. And of course he had his usual 0 assists. He only had 5 assists for the whole series. According to the same source, his lack of passing has alientated alot of his teammates.
"I had one Knick player tell me that its always the same shit with Andrea. Catch the ball. Face the basket. Pump fake. Jab step. Pump fake. Jab step. Then finally conclude it with a contested fadeaway jumpshot. Its gotten to a point where some teammates don't even look to pass him the ball. Back when the Knicks were building from the ground up with him and Damon Stoudamire. Horrible shot selection was allowed. So Bargnani took a bunch of shots. Won a scoring title. Finished top 5 in PPG in two other seasons. But now that they're contending, they dont wanna deal with his BS anymore. This is LaMelo's team now. And LaMelo isn't a big fan of Bargnani neither. So the teams superstar doesn't like you. You don't pass. You don't play defense. And you just laid an egg in the ECF. Theres no coming back from this. This is the point of no return.
LaMelo has replaced Bargnani as the focal point in the offense the last two years. While winning back to back MVPs. And upping his level of play during the playoffs. He averaged 36.3 PPG and 11.8 APG during the postseason. But while his production has increased its no coincidence that Bargnanis production has decreased. Here are Bargnani's PPG by season.
2000: 27.6 PPG (1st in League)
2001: 26.5 PPG (4th)
2002: 27.0 PPG (3rd)
2003: 22.7 PPG
2004: 18.5 PPG
You see the major dropoff over these last two seasons. Especially this year. With his scoring rapidly decreasing and his defense never improving. It just doesnt make sense for Bargnani to continue his career in New York. Hes better off going to a team that will more utilize his offensive talents.
But where? Which team?
"Im hearing houston. They have been floundering the last few seasons. They wanna make a splash. Bargnani could come in there and return to his 25+ PPG form. He will be happy. More shot attempts. No state tax. Friendlier gun laws so he could protect himself from crazed New York fans that hate his guts. I got my money on Bargnani going to the Rockets.
Bargnani to the Rockets? That would be interesting. But either way, hes NOT going to be a member of the New York Knicks next season.
Arrivederci Bargnani.
