The depth of this draft is crazy, so many good players are going to be taken outside of the top 10 and I dont think the actual outcome of this draft will look anything like what I am predicting below. But I guess we will see.
What are your thoughts on my predictions? Barry taken too high? Is Grant, Bog, Gordon, and Nurkic going outside of the top 10 crazy? Let me know your thoughts.
6. Kings - Rick Barry SF 6'7'' 205 20 B- C+ C B- C A
The Kings are an interesting team with a lot of back court talent with Edwards, Reddick, Burke and Famar all fighting for minutes in their young careers. Their front court is good enough Lauvergne and Meriweather holding down the fort. A true SF for the future to slip into this young squad could go a long way.
Luckily for the Kings, there are a couple high upside wings at this position in the draft including Rick Barry, TJ Warren and Jerami Grant. All of these players would fit the mold but ultimately, at this pick, I value what could be over what the player currently is. For the reason, I see the selection of Rick Barry being the pick.
Rick has the potential to come out of this draft as the best player. A lot of luck will come along with that relying on good training camps but the sky is the limit for him.
7. Wolves - Spencer Dinwiddie PG 6'5'' 215 21 C+ B- B- C+ D+ A
Minnesota has been rumoured to have a number of their core players on the block this offseason, most notably Antonio McDyess and Michael Finley. It is difficult to evaluate this team right now because, with these players potentially on the move it is difficult to tell what their needs truly are. But as it stands, those needs are back court help and a lot of it.
Last season both starting PG and SG managed to score less than 10ppg a piece which isn't a winning formula. With Smart off the board, a comparable PG remains available in Dinwiddie. Dinwiddie compares projects to be a better scorer than Smart but elite defense Smart has is the difference maker between the two.
With Dinwiddie at the helm, the Wolves finally a PG to build around and invest their time in.
If the Wolves decide not to blow it up, their core looks very promising and may be competitors in the tough West sooner than you think.
8. Mavs - Zach LaVine SG 6'5'' 200 19 B- B C+ C+ C- B
A solid built team, with a mix of youth and players in their prime who underachieved last season. The Mavs were a solid defensive team last year, I feel like they just need a little extra scoring from the wings. Two players in this years draft would look really nice on this squad to help fill that scoring void. Jordan Clarkson or Zach LaVine, both athletic SG who can score inside but also look like they can develop into great three point shooters. Ultimately, I see the Mavs taking LaVine.
I think Lavine will help the Mavs right away by putting up solid scoring numbers right out of the gate.
I feel like this team is a victim of being in a very difficult Western Conference and adding to this core now with a ready to go player will help them reach the playoffs.
9. Pistons - T.J. Warren SF 6'8'' 220 21 B- B- C- C+ C A
Seems to be a theme here, another team which needs backcourt scoring. Not getting at least 10ppg from the PG and SG positions seems to be really hurting a lot of these low seeded teams.
TJ warren is listed as a SF but if he can transition to the SG position, he will provide immediate support and likely 10-15 ppg player right off the bat.
There other good options here in this very deep draft, but I think the mix of ready now and future potential fits what Detroit is trying to build and their timeframe for contending in the East.
10. Cavs - Jordan Clarkson SG 6'4'' 194 22 C+ B- C+ C+ C- A
Armstrong and Aldridge are proving to be one of the best young front courts these past two seasons, so their is no need to look for bigs in this draft. Getting Cole Anthony in last seasons draft secured the future at the PG position so looks like another wing player is going at 10. Good think this draft is full of them.
Jordan Clarkson is the pick here, a great value selection at this pick. He can prove to be an outside threat which on the whole the PIstons lineup lacks.
Its tough to pass on players like Bogdan Bogdanovic and Jerami Grant but I think the Pistons need to go with potential with this pick. Clarkson has the highest upside between the three and that should be the basis for this selection.
