Golden State Warriors' Blueprint
Scarface says: Let's start with the obvious BIGGEST asset. Would you like to start at Fort Knox? They have a whopping 4700 gm cash, and may still be able to find homes for at least three of their pieces for even more cash. Most notably among their current four players as of this writing is Brian Taylor, who I believe they were asking 400.00 for. That would put them at 5100. To say this is the worst team in the league this season is an understatment. However, their picks are GOLD, especially this year, and with that much GM cash, they can get better, basically any time they want, buying talent with a whopping 53 million in soft cap this year, and if they move Taylor at any time, they will have a full 62 million soft cap, and more importantly their GM Cash.
Scarface's Verdict:Success
Smirt says:Yeah, lets put a proviso message on this team's roster page with the cautionary tale of not trying this at home while it not being the successful blueprint their GM might have imagine. Selling off every major asset for cash and draft picks while starting from ground level, a bare cupboard. What's the point??? I come from the philosophy best revered by Herman Edwards - 'you play to win the game' or on the flip side you build an arsenal for tomorrow. The Warriors have done neither/nor; instead accruing cash and draft pick arsenals that are faceless and nameless with no sense of direction on where the franchise is headed. Now they awaiting bouncing lottery balls and hope that fortune favors the brave and they wait and wait. Dude, I'm not Confucius and my patience wears thin quickly - so I wish this franchise the greatest luck moving forward.
Smirt's Verdict:Mess
Los Angeles Clippers' Blueprint
Scarface says:With a core of Tom Henderson, Rick BArry, Dwight Jones, Dave Cowens, and Roy Hibbert, and a bench that includes Foots Walker, Bill Walker, Scrempf, and Cliff Pondexter, and Jim Ard this team has a chance to slide into the 7th or 8th seed, but it may be a dogfight. They have a lot of players that can score, the basketball, but will their defense hold up night in, and night out. That my friends is the 62 million dollar question. Also REBOUNDING is a huge question mark. They have
a lot of decent, but not great rebounders, outside of Cowens. That is why I think they REALLY need to feature Ard either as a starter, or a bench player with signifigant minutes. I am not sold on Tom Henderson at 6 million a year, but at least it's only a two year deal. This team I could go either way on, but I will try to stick to the positive side!
Scarface's Verdict:Success
Smirt says:This roster construction is not going to get it done competing with the Sacramento Kings in a current manner. Rick Barry is an incredible defender, ball distributor, however, he stands alone in the back court as a force while Dave Cowens is another aging veteran whom will own it in the short term from the front court. Two strong chess pieces on a contender but Rick Barry's going to fade into the sunset within 3-4 seasons and they don't have a supporting cast around them to compete at the moment. Roy Hibbert represents the franchise's lone blue chip sensation for the future. He'll no doubt materialize as a significant low post player whom will dominant both offensively and defensively, however, by then Cowens' prime years will have faded and Barry will be starting a new career in broadcasting. Thus, this is an organization with a middle ground strategy that will have them on the outside looking in from a competitive standpoint.
Smirt's Verdict:Mess
Los Angeles Lakers' Blueprint
Scarface says:This team just recently moved Leon Douglas for two firsts, and 200.00 cash. I think the Pistons first in 78 has the chance at a much better haul. However any time you can get two firsts for a non star, AND cash, you did fairly well. With that said, I am sure the Lakers brass are hoping the Pistons miss the playoffs in 78 for sure, and possibly in 76. Aside from that, this team has a potential scoring machine in Bob McAdoo. Two young guns to develop in Jerryd Bayless, and Adrian Dantley. Three if you count BJ Armstrong who is much more of a project. Without Douglas this teams inability to rebound, and the fact that they will be almost asuredly unable to score more then they allow most nights doom this team this year. However since they have their first round pick, perhaps that is a very good thing.
Scarface's Verdict:Success
Smirt says:Essentially all I have to do is discuss Leon Douglas and Bob McAdoo and like 2Pac once rhymed - 'I can hollar about the mic and take it to the next scene.' Those two players form an incredible front court that'll be amongst the leaders at their respective positions. McAdoo will slot in as one of the top ten scorers in the ITP while Leon Douglas will fill up stats' sheets from a scoring and rebounding perspective. Outside of that, like the Avril Lavigne song 'Nobody's Home.' B.J. Armstrong isn't going to develop into a competitive point guard and Adrian Dantley is defensively deficient. A player to watch for the future would be Jerryd Bayless whom has the potential to burgeon into a rapid fire 25+ PPG scoring machine.
Smirt's Verdict:Mess
Phoenix Suns' Blueprint
Scarface says:Obviously this team spent a ton fo get Moses, and some would say given the fact that he is a nearly finished defensive/rebounding prospect, with B+ inside offense, and the fact that he could be the next Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, only much, MUCH younger, and the fact that they had young, talented point guard to get him the rock, and the fact that they traded four pieces to get Moses, and they still had their picks. Especially given the fact that they only had 500.00 gm cash left. However Huxley did not stop there. He traded three firsts, and I believe 500.00 gm cash, only to realize later, that he may not be able to camp the future big three at all, if he extends all three.
This team is going to suck, and since Don owns all three firsts, he is going to be likely laughing all the way to the bank for three straight seasons. Obviously while Divac is very young, and talented, he is not worth three firsts, and 500.00 when you just traded the farm for Moses Malone. I just see a huge mess here, and even if they do retain all three for one year, one or more could bolt via free agency after three years.
Scarface's Verdict:Mess
Smirt says: Cut through all the trades and acknowledge that Huxley has dispensed of all his GM Cash and Trade Picks and realize that when the smoke clears he's left with three players: Tim Hardaway, Vlade Divac and Moses Malone. You could select any three players you want, heck, toss in McG and Slick Watts alongside his Malone and you still wouldn't win!! A trio of superstars current and future isn't going to cut it, even if Hardaway and Divac develop to an All-Star caliber level. In the present day and then for the next couple seasons thereafter Malone is left on an island alone in competitiveness - this is a very scary scenario as the Suns lack depth and assets to acquire more help in aiding their organization moving forward.
Smirt's Verdict:Mess
Portland Trailblazers' Blueprint
Scarface says:I really like Bobby Jones. I am of the opinion that he is one of the most complete, two way players in the entire league. He can probably play four positions, offensively, and defensively if not five. However outside of Lacey, and Jones where is the offense going to come from. Gale should not be a scorer. He is a nice facilitator, as is Cleamons. Are they going to start both, and then
bring RObinzine as their fifth starter at SF? Or will they start the Enigma Martinez as the Rebounding X Factor? Either way I think this team is too thin, and not able to defend, or score enough to be a factor this season. Will they next season? I am not sure. The West has some very strong teams.
Scarface's Verdict:Mess
Smirt says: I'm giving this franchise a success designation but it's in a tepid manner. I do absolutely love that they have tent pole elite defenders in Mike Gale and Bobby Jones from the PG and C positions. Not only that, Mike Gale provides both passing and stealing traits from the floor general spot with Bobby Jones a legitimate 20/10 athlete. Sam Lacey and Bill Robinzine extend the defensive mindset and scoring talent that'll be productive moving forward. The Portland Trailblazers will need to address their overall lack of team scoring with future draft picks and free agency - interjecting an offensive infusion to the off guard position, primarily.
Smirt's Verdict:Success
Sacramento Kings' Blueprint
Scarface says:Since I am a biased writer, I am not going to go on, and on about my team other then to say that I believe we are deep, talented, can score, rebound, and defend. Since some teams felt the need to create a two page thread in the first, and I believe still only trade discussion in league history, it is clear we are the villians this year. Ok, so we can be The Legion of Doom, or The Monstars whichever you prefer. I can wear the black hat, and embrace the Dark Side, as if I was Darth Vader. Come to the dark side with me, we have cookies!
Scarface's Verdict:Success
Smirt says:Yeah, um, wow what can I say? This organization is going to break Year 1 Scoring Records and take this game to a whole new level. The collection of impressive superstar, franchise player is absolutely ridiculous. The roll call is as follows: Fred Brown, Bob Dandridge, Mitch Kupchak, George McGinnis and Bob Lanier!! Seriously?!?! What GMs allowed this to happen via trade??? *shakes head* Fred Brown's a diverse PG sensation whom will provide high #'s in all categories except blocks while Bob Dandridge scores at a league leader percentage and is always a solid piece on a playoff contender. Mitch Kupchak will one day be among the Top 5 in PPG while George McGinnis is walking and talking Triple Double Machine. Rounding it out Bob Lanier is an unbelievable force down low in every facet of the game, especially from a free throw accruing standpoint where I've seen him rack up 1000+ FTs in a season. Yes, my fellow GMs, peep this roster and realize - Game Over!
Smirt's Verdict:Mess. (for the rest of the league!)
Seattle Supersonics' Blueprint
Scarface says:Phil Smith, and Mickey Johnson was a hell of a start, but where is the third option? My guess is it will be Stacey King. He of B inside offense, but also B- defense, and B- rebounding. This team will likely need rebounding help in the worst way, and lacks the offense, or the defense to compete with most teams. Hopefully they can get their third piece in the draft, or FA. I think this team has way too many question marks for me to be too high on them honestly.
Scarface's Verdict:Mess
Smirt says:The Supersonics have some work ahead of them, however, with draft picks and free agency they'll be able to fill in around Phil Smith and Mickey Johnson - two players whom will be superstars at their respective positions. They both have long, tenured resumes from past incarnations and I expect nothing different from them. I still stand by the fact that Mickey Johnson isn't a player whom can lead a franchise but with enough assistance this team can be transformed into a winner. 18 year old Bill Willoughby has the most astonishing rebounding rating I've ever seen and his inside scoring abilities are already advanced. This is a serious player to watch as the league progresses. The Seattle Supersonics have a beginning of a foundation, however, need 2 more solid, competitive difference making pieces to put them over the top.
Smirt's Verdict:Success.
