Quite often we just throw them away and players drafted in round two quickly relocates to Europe, China or Burger King. However, my recent discussion with FDA (Knicks GM, not my point guard) made me look into history and all the diamonds in the rough. My task here is an intriguing one – create a team out of 2nd rounders and make it the team to be proud of!
Centers:
Daniel Oturu (C) C+ C- F+ A- B (selected round 2 ; pick 12 by Grizzlies in 2001)
Roy Rogers (C) B- D+ D- A- B- (2 ; 2 by Kings in 2005)
Jarnell Stokes (C) B- D D- B B (2 ; 14 by Knicks in 2002)
Did you notice that last season, in post-sim threads, Warriors GM kipper mention Oturu more often than AI or Drazen Petrovic? Must be because his name sounds a bit funny. Oturu-turu-turu. Daniel developed into very decent rebounder. Jarnell Stokes, his current teammate in Golden State, is forced to wait for more opportunities after good season in Cavaliers. Rogers, meanwhile, so far averages over two blocks in just around 19 minutes!
Power Forwards:
Jelani McCoy (PF) B D D- B+ B- (2 ; 2 by Knicks in 2008)
Brian Skinner (PF) C+ D+ F+ B+ C+ (2 ; 11 by Rockets in 2008)
Both are the picks of the most recent draft, which shows, that historically PF is rare catch in the 2nd round. While McCoy will be testing D league, I am a bit surprised that Brian is unemployed at the moment – his skills would convert into solid 10-15 minutes in most of lottery teams, or those who want to do well in D league.
Small Forwards:
DeAndre Daniels (SF) C+ B D+ A C (2 ; 2 by Lakers in 2002)
K.J. McDaniels (SF) C B C A- C (2 ; 3 by Bucks in 2002)
They have similar names, very similar skillset and their history in this league is pretty much the same too. Not playing at all for first two years. Then DeAndre had 30 minutes average, not in some scrub-club, but 2006 Raptors! However, just for 22 games, till Toronto had some injuries to deal with. K.J. was averaging 12 minutes on the same team, but for 80 games.
Shooting Guards:
Malachi Flynn (PG) C A B+ A- D+ (2 ; 2 by Knicks in 2001)
Grant Riller (PG) B B C+ B+ C- (2 ; 11 by Mavericks in 2001)
Yes, I had to put two point guards, cause this seems to be the best position to draft in 2nd round. Or was, in 2001. Flynn will receive over 34 M for his remaining two years in Warriors. Not bad for a kid 29 teams passed on in first round? Grant Riller never targeted similar money; however, he is known for his ability to score. Got to shine in rebuilding San Antonio team now, with 17.7 PPG.
Point Guards:
Tyler Ennis (PG) C B- A A D+ (2 ; 3 by Bulls in 2002)
Zoran Planinic (PG) C+ B A- B- D+ (2 ; 25 by Bulls in 2006)
Nico Mannion (PG) C A- C B+ C- (2 ; 11 by Clippers in 2001)
More or less since day one Tyler is known as solid perimeter defender and floor general. This season he is expected to have the most minutes in his career, since his team… well, simply lacking better guards. Planinic could be called the best grab in the history of the drafts considering how late he was selected. 54th overall pick and he just signed 18 M deal. Not sure if he is worth that much after his 5 games in first two seasons, but Zoran now has 3 seasons to prove me wrong and his skillset looks quite decent. Finally combo 3&D guard, two time champion and former MVP of D league Nico Mannion wraps my team up. He was scoring solid 12.6 PPG for Championship 2004 Clippers, but since then his career went down a bit. Maybe he can revive it in San Antonio, playing alongside with above mentioned G.Riller.
In general, frontcourt of this team looks ok for rebounding and post defence, but would not be a big threat offensively - scoring must come from guards. 2nd rounders team, as expected, has no stardom power, but is quite even and deep.
Did I miss any solid 2nd rounders? Would this team make the playoffs? Let me know in the comments!
