Pistons Salary: 25.47 million Jazz Salary: 22.03 x 1.15 = 25.33, need to add $150k to make it match. Trade checker said it works - as he has 680k CAP space? The cap cannot be used after using the 115% rule. so if your free cap makes up the total difference in salaries that is fine, but since you had 3.3 million in difference, that 680k is not enough. the trade checker does not always work correctly, this is a case where it doesn't.

Not only that, but the Pistons are $3.6 million over the cap, and according to the salaries you listed, this only reduces the salaries by $3.44 million. Even if it was legal, it still wouldn't get the Pistons under the cap.
I'm just not seeing a deal between those 2 teams that will be legal and get the Pistons under the hard cap.

yeah, it will take a lot of salary moving in order to clear 3.6 million in cap space.

yeah the only way would be gallinari, haywood, jordan, smith, and montross for two of Piston's max guys.

that would be 31 mill and 27.34, which would clear 3.66 million

on a side note, i want to try making a better trade checking spreadsheet that works more consistently if i have time and can figure out all the formulas.

If I understand correctly, what he's saying is that you have to meet both conditions (regardless of the cap space because it becomes nil once you make the trade to go over the soft cap essentially): Within the 115% while also having a difference in salaries that allows the Pistons to get under the Hard Cap, i.e. a difference of at least $3,641,471. I've been messing with it using my roster since I saw the post and it's very tough to do unless you have a wide variety of salaries to work with.

when you are doing a trade using the 115% rule for matching salaries, you cannot take your current cap space into account. It becomes a non-factor in the trade. it is only a factor if you are able to use that cap space as the difference in salaries and you remain under the soft cap. if a trade puts one or both teams over the cap it has to be within 115%

So a trade that would work given both of your rosters and without involving two max.'s could be: Jazz send: Spencer Haywood $6,600,000 DeAndre Jordan $8,000,000 Danilo Gallinari $8,882,692 Eric Montross $1,799,519 Michael Young $332,817 Total = $25,615,028 Pistons send: Bob McAdoo $15,500,000 Nicolas Baly $5,500,000 Terrell Douglas $5,000,000 Luther Burden $3,375,900 Total = $29,375,900 Difference in salaries = $3,760,872 and is within the 115% rule leaving the Pistons with $119,401 worth of breathing space below the hard cap. Not saying that either of you would agree to the above trade but it works!

Why cant there just be a freaking override option for tiny bullshit like this... jesus the 115% rule allows for people over the cap to take on more salary, so it makes sense to have a limit to it. if you just operate under the salary cap there will be no issues making a trade.

new trade works, but pistons still need to cut 2+ million in salary.

Not sure what the f' is Pistons doing and what's this fuss is all about. Just find a damn team who has bunch of cap and give them 50 bucks for taking on Roberts exp 5 mil deal, and whola, you're 2 mil under the hard cap which gives you a room to sign 2 more guys for minimum to fill roster with 12 guys.
It's really that simple.

of course waiting until after the final fa will lessen the amount of teams that will have cap room

hes offering his 1st and no one took it. It also comes down to people with fa and wanting to see what they can get. I was urprised though teams that are "rebuilding" didnt jump all over a 1st for an expiring. But I also did offer him the ability to go under the cap and fill out a roster of 12 and be a couple mill under the cap.
